Helping Your Child at Scole Primary School: A Simple Guide for Parents
This guide explains how we help children who might need extra support to learn.
How do we know if a child needs extra help?
If you are worried about your child, please talk to their teacher. You don’t need to wait for a parents' evening.
Our teachers regularly talk to school leaders about how all the children are doing. We find out if a child needs extra help by:
-
Talking to you, the parents.
-
Watching how your child learns in class.
-
Looking at their schoolwork.
-
Doing little tests to see what they know.
-
Talking to their old nursery or school.
Our special educational needs coordinator (we call them the SENDCo) helps teachers support children who need extra help. You can always talk to the SENDCo or the headteacher too.
How will the school help my child?
We help children in different ways, depending on what they need.
1. Help in the Classroom All our teachers are skilled at changing lessons to help every child learn. This is the best way to help.
2. Extra Help in Small Groups Sometimes, children need a little boost to catch up. They might work in a small group with a teacher or teaching assistant. This could be in the classroom or another quiet space.
3. More Specialised Help If a child still needs more help, we will talk to you. We might ask an expert, like a speech therapist or an educational psychologist, to help us understand your child's needs better.
At this point, your child will be put on our SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) list. This just means we know they need extra support, and we have a clear plan to help them.
Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) For children who need a lot of help for a long time, we can ask the council for a special plan. This is called an EHCP. This plan says exactly what help your child will get from teachers and health workers. We review the plan with you every year.
How will schoolwork be right for my child?
The teacher will change the work to make it just right for your child. They might use different books, special equipment, or give them extra support so they can join in with the class.
How will I know how my child is doing?
-
We check your child's progress all the time.
-
We will talk to you at parents' evenings.
-
We have special plans for some children that we will share with you and ask what you think.
-
You can make an appointment to talk to the teacher or SENDCo at any time. We are here to help you support your child at home.
How will you look after my child's happiness?
We want every child to feel happy and safe at school. We have a caring team of staff.
Bullying is not allowed. We teach children how to be kind to each other.
If your child is feeling sad or worried, we have special groups and people they can talk to.
What about school trips and clubs?
All children can go on trips and join clubs. We will make sure your child has the support they need to join in and have fun. We always check that trips are safe for everyone.
What happens when my child moves class or school?
We know moving can be tricky. We help make it easier by:
-
Talking to their old nursery or new school.
-
Making sure their new teacher knows all about them.
-
Arranging extra visits so they can get used to their new classroom or school.
Who should I talk to?
-
Start with your child's teacher. They know your child best.
-
You can also talk to our SENDCo (the teacher in charge of special needs), Mrs Peters.
-
Our headteacher, Mrs Cerullo, is also happy to help.
You can call the school office on 01379 642675 to make an appointment.
We want to work with you to help your child. Your thoughts are very important to us.
